The Creative Chronicles…an unorthodox name for a vlog. In this week’s video, I’m taking you behind the scenes as I prepare for Violetta's first book and mask stall. It was such fun and I felt like I did as a child playing 'Shops'...our second favourite game behind 'Dress the Paper Doll'. This was followed closely by 'Schools' and my sister reminded me the other day that we also loved playing 'Libraries', stamping books with our 'Non Negotiable' stamp. Thems were the days, but now I'm so lucky I get to do a version of them all! I’m a violinist, teacher and creator of musical middle-grade adventures involving time-travel. I love imagining stories in my music and like all things creative, sometimes we need to step outside of our comfort zones. Performing, yes, that can be frightening, but for people like me who feel they were born in a different era, the internet sometimes seems like alien territory! However, instead of avoiding it, I thought I'd use opportunity to share what goes into creating these magical tales. Over this second four week series, I’ll be setting myself some intentions, jobs I need to do, but along the way, I’ll be searching for everyday magic. Although this is a video log, I won’t be calling it a vlog. The individualist in me is rebelling against that term. Instead, I’ll be calling it Creative Chronicles. Pleasingly alliterative, and it reminds me of Narnia. Next week I'll be preparing for school visits. So exciting and I hope you can be here to follow along with me. This video features a version of Ondine that combines both Ravel and Debussy's compositions for piano. Debussy's version was inspired by Arthur Rackham's beautiful illustrations that accompany the tale of Ondine the water nymph. Ravel's version is from Gaspard de la Nuit, inspired by the following poem by Aloysius Bertrand. 'Listen! - Listen! - It is I, Ondine, brushing with these drops of water the resonant lozenge panes of your window lit by the moon's bleak rays; and here, in her gown of watered silk, is the lady of the chateau gazing from her balcony at the fine starlit night and the beautiful sleeping lake. Every wave is a water sprite swimming in the current, every current is a path winding its way to my palace, and my palace, with its flowing structure, lies at the bottom of the lake, in the triangle of fire, earth and air. Listen! - Listen! - My father is beating the croaking water with a branch of green alder, and my sisters caress the fresh islands of grass, water-lily and gladiolus with their briny arms, or mock the deciduous, bearded willow, fishing with rod and line." Her murmured song over, she begged me to receive her ring on my finger, to be the husband of an Ondine, and with her to visit her palace, to be the king of the lakes. And as I answered that I loved a mortal, she became angered and hurt, wept a few tears, burst out laughing, and fainted in sudden showers that rustled white down my blue stained-glass windows.'
